Why do southern Italians and Sicilians have tan skin?

I heard that they have darker skin because many years ago there was an influx of Africans and Middle Easterners to Sicily and the southern part of Italy and that lead to a lot of Italians having kids with Africans and Middle Easterners. Please provide a link to a site if you have one.
