Which is more important when installing laminate?

I am a bit lost. Im installing laminate in my family room and I'm a bit lost as to which is more important wear layer or thickness. Ive seen some 6mm AC3 laminate, and some 8.3mm AC2 laminate, and Im a bit unsure as to which would be better. If I went with them 6mm could I compensate by using a thicker padding underneath? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
