I have a question for Catholic Scholars?

Years ago, I read somewhere that those outside of the sacrament of communion were lost. I also understood some Catholic material stating that the Roman Catholic church was the only true church, and that salvation is found inside the church, and therefore (by inference) those who remain outside the church are eternally lost. Is this the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church? Please cite references. thank you.
