How many World War II veterans do you know or have you known?

I actually knew one at OMS Japanese Christian Church, Walnut Creek, CA, USA: the late George Takai, who served in Italy with the 100ID, and later in France with the 442RCT (a unit that landed the lion's share of Purple Hearts in France for 1944---they kept fighting, in fact won several key battles, in the face of casualty rates that would have cowed most units of both sides).
